Caring for and Cleaning Your Tanzanite Jewelry
With a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, tanzanite is slightly softer than sapphire or ruby. Tanzanites make excellent dress rings, pendants and earrings, but care should be taken if they are to be worn as engagement rings.
When choosing a ring or designing tanzanite jewelry, consider a setting that surrounds the tanzanite with metal or gems to help protect it.
CARING FOR YOUR TANZANITE AT HOME
Avoid ultrasonic cleaning, as its high-frequency vibration can readily facilitate cleavage in certain gemstones. Instead, use a small soft brush and warm soapy water to gently clean the upper and underside of the tanzanite. Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.
Jewelers commonly use ultrasonic cleaners, so if you’re having items professionally cleaned at a jeweler’s, make sure to remind them not to use this machine, as it could fracture the stone.
Store tanzanite in a protective pouch or box, separately from other jewelry, especially diamonds, so it doesn’t get scratched.
Avoid wearing tanzanite jewelry during vigorous activity, such as exercise, sports and outdoor adventures.
